I have seen ones who swear their radio is resetting their Expo settings that they had setup on a previous flight and then all of the sudden their settings are gone.
What many beginners don't realize is that when they put their radio in the bad or carry case, they are hitting the switch position and setting the position to a new setting. This could run into a potentially dangerous situation if a person is not used to flying their plane without Expo and then all of the sudden it has no exponential on the throws and it is behaving much different than they are used to it behaving in the air.
As you can understand, this can lead to the person over correcting or over controlling their plane into the ground. What I tell beginners is make sure you set your switch positions for Ailerons, rudder, and elevator to position 0 before setting your Expo setting.
This way you know which position you are making the changes to. Many pros such as Michael Wargo will tell you they have multiple settings to do different things. The lowest, would be non 3D flying such as pattern flying, then 3D, then the highest setting would be tumbling and other snappy maneuvers. This way the plane handles differently for the same inputs to fit different flying situations, 3D etc. Other even more expensive radios such as the Futaba 18MZ can do even more than the standard Spektrum 3 settings.
So basically, each switch can have its own setting. Paying attention to and understanding how this can affect your flying and paying attention to where the positions of the switches are each time you fly is crucial to becoming a better pilot and truly beginning to understand what your radio can do for you in the air.
The truth is, you may not need these settings until your flying advances to each consecutive level, however, even if you don't need all of them, you need to pay attention to how you are setting your radio up and again what position the switches are set to.

You will want to keep this switch in the "Hi" at all times, including during GroundStation transmitter calibration. You must keep this switch in the "Arm" position for normal flight performance. Flipping the switch to the "Disarm" position should immediately disarm the Flight Controller and brake the motors. If you return the switch to the "Arm" position within 1 second, the Flight Controller will immediately re-arm; after that time you must use the combination stick command to re-arm as will be discussed below.
Therefore, flipping the switch to the "Arm" position will not cause the Flight Controller to arm unless the flight controller was armed with the switch in the "Arm" position within the previous second. Almost every programmable radio will have similar options. Servo "throw" is the measurement of how far a servo will move when activated by moving the stick on the transmitter.
How to setup Spektrum radio dual rates and expo switch position
Look at the picture to the right to see how the movement of the stick is reflected on the servo. Dual rate allows the pilot to create a second maximum throw setting.
With the control surfaces moving a smaller amount, the plane will fly in a much more docile manner. The faster your plane flies, the less control surface is needed to effect a change in the movement of the aircraft.
Think about fighter jets. These are long and sleek aircraft with very small control surfaces. Think about how the wing is sized compared to a slower prop plane. That same principle holds true for model aircraft. If you are flying a hopped up Electric Ducted Fan jet, then you know the slightest movement of the aileron, rudder or elevator will cause a sudden and drastic movement of the plane.
Imagine what would happen if you actuated the FULL servo throw at mph? Have you seen stunt pilots fly their 3D foamies at the flying field or RC show?
These people are controlling extremely powerful planes that can seemingly flip end over end and dance in the air inches away from the pilot's face.Spektrum DXE 7Ch Radio
They really are a marvel to behold. In this case, they want the servo throw to be as BIG as possible. Activating this setting allows the servos to move farther than their factory settings in order to give the pilot dramatic movement in the control surfaces of the plane. Most programmable transmitters allow you to set Dual Rates. I will show you how to do it for the Spektrum DX6i my favorite!

There is nothing wrong with using individual switches for your dual rates and expo if you like. I know some very good pilots that keep the dual rate and expo settings on separate switches because that better fits their style and what they want to do with those parameters.
DXe Transmitter System w/ AR610 Receiver
We all have different likes in how a plane handles and there can be big differences between planes as well. You must do what is most comfortable for you and for many that does not involve all the dual rates on one switch. Though I seldom use the two lower deflection states having them available if something goes wrong can save an airplane. The one switch concept also lets me to use one switch position to try more radical parameters with the safety of being able to flip the switch to fall back to a known configuration.
Always start with the plane manufacturers recommendations for control throws and get used to them so you understand how the plane flies. Once that baseline is established you can use one of the switch positions to experiment with more aggressive setups in flight and be able to flip back to a more docile configuration for landing.
First, go to the Monitor screen and flip the switch you want to use back and watch the screen to see what values are changing. Setting up dual rates is simple and remains adjustable so you can continue to fine-tune the way your plane flies. I use the G switch upper right on the Spektrum DX9 because it is easy for me to reach and can be used without conflict with other functions.
Also, I always set the G switch up so that with the switch in the rear-most position I have my highest rates with the remaining forward positions having progressively lesser settings. You can set the switch up any way that is most comfortable for you.
If you are not familiar with using a transmitter switch while flying, particularly if you are new to the hobby, try to pick a switch that is most comfortable for you. In moments of panic, you want to be reaching for the right switch. I list my initial settings here only to show the pattern of the programming. You should enter the values you think best for your situation, plane and skill level at that moment. They can set a new plane up per the kit instructions to get familiar with how the plane flies. Then they can slowly add more control movement or reduce expo on one of the switch positions or both in small steps as they become more comfortable flying that plane.
The dual rates and expo need not be the same from ailerons to rudder to elevator. I use consistent values as a starting point for all my new planes then modify them as needed as I build flight time and recognize input changes that would help the plane do what I am looking for.
The middle switch position has reduced throws and the third, forward most position has the least control movement and sometimes the highest expo. I use these switch position assignments for every plane I fly for consistency.
There is enough brain-tasking when flying a plane normally. When something happens, and I need to reduce a planes sensitivity, my fingers muscle memory know what switch I need to flick to change throws if that is what is needed. I always have the highest control surface deflection in this switch position.Excel rank 3 columns
On most of my planes I set the control surfaces up mechanically to get all possible throw. Remember that I have been flying planes with extreme control surface throw for a bunch of years and have had a long time to get accustomed to the sensitivity. You can always increase deflections later after getting a feel for the plane if you want it to be more active.
Some planes have a hyper-active rudder or ailerons or elevator so reducing that throw more than the others can make the plane more comfortable to me. I try new settings knowing that I have two other configurations to go to if need be. Once I find the values I like best, I move them to the Position 1 setting.
This is where the lowest control surface movements live. Some planes need greatly reduced throws for very precise flying or to calm down a hyper-sensitive plane for landing.
